Aperture levels adjustment tool video tutorial

This post came as an answer to a question that Thomas Schlein has sent in. Thomas has a vintage photo effect Photoshop tutorial and he wants to translate it into Aperture, as that’s his main photo-editing platform. Thomas’s tutorial uses the Photoshop levels adjustment tool, and he’s asking how to set his levels adjustments accordingly in Aperture.

Thank you very much for sending in your question Thomas! That’s an interesting question, and to answer it I’ve posted 2 videos I found on YouTube explaining basic and advanced image editing with Aperture levels adjustment tool. I gotta say that I’m not really experienced with Aperture, so I hope these videos answer your question.

  1. wow this does seem a little different from photoshop, well at least the second part. Though the general idea is basically the same. I honestly just can never understand why they come up with all these different programs that basically do the exact same thing. I mean thomas can you tell me what makes you prefer Aperture over photoshop? Or someone that prefers GIMP or lightroom over whatever! It just escapes me and i don’t mean no disrespect to anyone’s choices, I just sincerely want to know..

  2. Hey Grace
Firstly I do not prefer PS over AP and I dont think you can compare the two programs just like that.
You can compare AP, Capture One and Lightroom as the raw converter apps they are.
PS is much more than raw converting, its also very strong picture editing. AP, LR and CO have some of the PS features but not all. I think must photographers has their favorite raw converter and then jump into PS or alike when needed.
If one program did it all and 100% good, we did not have this comments. Its a matter of taste, needs and budget.
Aperture was a natural choice for me, leaving the Windows world when buying my iMac.
Some people choose Nikon or Canon and some end up with Pentax or Sony…
