Street Photography

Street photography is a type of documentary photography. It’s about documenting the human condition, recording peoples’ states as they go about their lives. Most simply put, street photography is taking candid shots of people in public places such as streets, cafés, malls, and about anywhere human life exists.

Some might argue that street photography need not contain people to make a shot. Others insist that it’s all about people. I guess it’s up to the individual photographer doing the job. I personally agree with the second party – at least for the most part. Street photography is all about people (or any living soul for that matter). Catching their daily acts, observing their behavior, recording a moment of a person in time with their expressions of happiness, fear, sadness, joy, excitement, and just about anything… recording a moment that almost everyone passing by would just consider as a daily scene, a regular event. And savoring that moment till the end of time. Street photography is about love and acceptance. It’s about sharing and caring. It’s about giving and receiving.

For someone to be a true street photographer, they should be in the scene, they should participate in the event, they should be one in the crowd. A street photographer should not sneak with their long lens and snap shots of people from afar. They should be among the rest. Feel their joy, hear their cries, touch their souls. Street photography is not about intruding on people’s lives, and violating their personal space. It’s about hearing them. It’s about feeling them. It’s about becoming part of them.

For a shot to make it as a street photo it needs to be able to tell a story, it should be able to make an impression, it should be able to transfer an emotion. Street photography is not about making the right composition, following the right rule, or making the best measurement. Street photography is solely about telling a story. Street photography is about speaking to the viewer. Street photography is about having someone wonder, or connect to a person in that split of a second that the shutter goes up and that vision is recorded and saved for good.

  2. Thanks for an amazing post Diana. I love your collection of street photography that you have shared. The candid nature of street photography is what I like most this style so much. The shots are actully a glimpse into the day to day lives and frezes a moment in time. Abstract street photographs are my favorite images to print on canvas.

  6. What a great collection of images. It’s amazing to see so many street photographers in one place. You can start to get a feel for the common elements (like use of light) and the differences (like how must contrast they add in post-procesing). Wonderful stuff.

  7. Love Alan Wilson’s shot of the street band. The three girls sitting in the background really help to pull it all together. I can totally relate to this shot, as I spent years working as a rock/blues guitarist. As a teenager, I participated in many of these impromptu events. Well done!
