Commercial photography is basically an area of photography where the photographer is paid by different businesses to commercially use his/her images to promote their work through advertisements, posters, flyers, magazines, websites, brochures, catalogs, corporate publications and the like.
Commercial photography is a diversified industry encompassing various areas such as advertising photography, fashion photography, portrait photography, glamour photography, editorial photography, food photography, product photography, corporate and senior photography, industrial photography, architectural photography, medical photography, photojournalism, paparazzi, and so on.
To be a successful commercial photographer you need to develop a high sense of style that attracts your clients, as well as the ability to employ that style in your images on the practical level. When you get a job, you should be able to really understand what the client wants and what the idea they are trying to bring out about their product or business is. Try approaching that product from different angles, and see which one provokes that idea in the best and most creative way possible. To be able to make it you should be into the process of taking something ordinary and turn it into something extra ordinary, and to actually feel the joy of that and have the passion for it.
To become familiar with what you might be getting yourself into, and be able to decide if for you commercial photography would be worth the time and effort you’re gonna be putting into it you can start by becoming an assistant to an experienced commercial photographer. Accompany them on photo shoots, join the brain storming process of coming up with the perfect image for products, go with them to client meetings, and have an idea if that’s something you’re up for.
Peter Place is your average 24 year-old, small town boy, who picked up his first DSLR a couple years ago with a bag full of hopes and dreams. The original intentions he had for getting a camera was for automotive photography, but he soon fell in love with off camera lighting and portraiture.
With every photograph, Peter tries to create a mood, a feeling, a sense of wonder and excitement. He wants viewers of his work to take a second or two longer when looking at his photographs.
“I did not go to school for photography or art. I think photography and art are things that cannot be taught, but rather, should be learned through yourself. I’m self taught. I don’t consider myself an artist, I just love to create. I know no boundaries. I want my photographs to be interesting, eye catching and thought provoking.“
