Editorial photography includes any kind of photo shot specifically for publication in a magazine, newspaper, or even an online post (without it being an ad). It could be documentary, it could be sports, it could be medical, it could be style and beauty. Basically it could be a million different things, as long as it illustrates a story or idea within the context of the article or post. Editorial photography also includes front page or cover shots.

Editorial photographers often don’t make as much money as commercial photographers do but they get more creativity freedom and space, plus they get a credit line for the shot within an article. They do tend to take this path as a way of building a portfolio that can be presented to clients for commercial photography jobs.

Fashion photography incorporates portraits of models showcasing some kind of clothing or product. A fashion photographer has to take lead and find the perfect model, scene, light and color that would best present the product in question and emphasize it’s value or beauty.

Fashion photography is often included in fashion magazines such as vogue and allure, as well as on a brand’s website. It has developed its own aesthetic in which the clothes and fashions are enhanced sometimes by the presence of exotic locations, accessories, or acts.

In fashion photographs you often see the perfect models with perfect bodies, starkly captured with just the right light and contrast. They often seem inviting and seductive.

To be a successful fashion photographer, you need to incorporate all those elements, along with an eye and talent for posing your model bringing out all the beauty and grace of the clothing or product you’re shooting. You need to study this kind of photos, look at how they are presented in magazines and publications. Notice the poses and gestures, the lighting and background or environment. Stiff, uncomfortable, or unattractive models will not do. You need to gain experience interacting with the people you’re photographing, relaxing them and reassuring them, guiding them and posing them for your photographs. Break the ice with a joke. Make them laugh. Maybe show them their shots. Basically just be their friend.

Along with your own charisma and flair, good lighting equipment and a great ability to control it can really go a long way as well.

Oleg Igorin is a fashion and beauty photographer from Moscow – Russia, currently based in New York. Oleg has always loved looking at fashion and beauty photos in magazines, but has really got into it about 5 years ago upon purchasing a compact digital camera. At first, his models were mainly friends and family, but in time his name got out and he was getting lots of clients which allowed him to build his very own large photography studio. Later he moved to New York city to pursue his dream, and now he is bigger than ever.
