Surreal female portrait photography by Adriano Sodré

Adriano Sodré is a photographer and cinematographer from Porto, Portugal. He has earned a degree in cinema and shoots mainly with film. Adriano tries to capture small gestures and simple moments, mostly photographing girls. But what’s more interesting is how he captures the light in a special way, surreal and nostalgic in a sense only film can produce!

  1. Amazing photos really full of inspiration. definitely among the very best I’ve ever seen!

  2. astounding stuff. a real understanding of how to use light.

  3. wow its so beautiful portrait photographs!! nice work Adriano!

  4. wow its so beautiful photographs!!

  5. Seriously, this isnt good work. Taking poorly exposed images of women into sunlight. Oh, and of course the smoking. How deep is that. The obligatory knickers on the bed shot. There are thousands of these images kicking about.

    • =) youre of course entitled to your opinion though its really shocking to me. i felt i was in heaven working on this post. every shot fueled a feeling of well being and inspiration in me. everyone has a unique taste after all i guess =)

  6. imo i think these pictures are awesome !

  7. ummmm I think you need to go look up the definition of surreal. I think a better title for this post would be “hipster female portrait photography” nice try though.

  8. ‘surreal’: a literary and artistic movement that attempts to express the workings of the subconscious and is characterized by fantastic imagery and incongruous juxtaposition of subject matter.

the above images: photographs of young women

sorry and all that…but you need to be concious of the words and phrases you use when you describe your work. it’s not being pedantic, it’s about being accurate. and yes, sorry again, it matters.

  9. Surreal adj. Resembling a dream
“as irrational and surreal as a dream”
according to wordWeb if you want to get into the technicalities!

    these photos are:
    1. surreal – check
    2.dreamy – check
    3.magical – check
    4.fantastic – check!!!

you know its such a shame that instead of admiring the beauty before you, some people decide to get into tiny little details and look for things to ruin the fantasy someone has created for them to enjoy!!

  10. ah.. Hello?? Excuse me!! What is this a freaking grammar lesson! The guy rocks and y’all (oops I mean you all!) know it. If you can’t admit that these photos are mind blowing just cause you’re not as half as good as this maybe you should go practice a little more photography and a little less fucking literature!

  11. ok guys im sorry I think I need to draw the line here.

first of all, offending each other’s work is not acceptable here on my site. There was a comment that I actually (and sadly) had to delete. I do bring you the best out there and I think you all know it, otherwise you wouldn’t be here right now. and even if you dnt like someones work, thats no free pass to offend them. If you disagree with sth, that doesn’t mean its wrong, it simply just means you as an individual dont like it. As long as you can express that gracefully (and perhaps offer some positive feedback), youre of course most welcome to do so and we would definitely love to hear what you have to say. If however, youre gonna be mean and rude and attempt to offend others, im sorry but I have to say I like to keep my community free of that. I do know most sites out there let you do that, so you might wanna try those. They’ll even take the post off the site for your own convenience which is great I suppose!! I don’t do that, if something is not good enough I do not put it on in the first place.

Second, regarding the whole grammatical and vocabulary checks and lessons im sure we all appreciate those! Ive actually had this same conversation in the past with some who did not like a post (for some reason or another) and all they had to say was how they disliked how I described it. When something is very beautiful as if out of this world, you (or at least, I) describe it as surreal. When you say mind-blowing or breath-taking that doesn’t mean you were actually lost for breath!! It just means its really really good, but yet you wouldn’t have a problem with that. This is a photography blog not a photoshop blog. When I say surreal, it means really good. If you think such a word would represent sth LITERALLY out of this world, youre mistaken. Thats something you would find on PS related sites. Photos are taken of the reality around us and therefore can never have the “magical” effect you would expect unless it was severely manipulated.

Last but not least, I would really love to thank Adriano for sharing his wonderful photos with us and also thank all of you who dropped by and shared their lovely remarks and insights. Let’s all help each other evolve and get better. Lend a hand to your fellow brother, and lets spread some loving =)

    Love, peace, empathy ♥♥

    • Great words Diana!! I’ve seen this kind of thing taking place on other blogs, and I’m very happy to see you taking a stand. These photos are absolutely SURREAL! fantastic work Adriano. keep’em coming :)

  12. These are fantastic photos. They convey emotion well. The models are good and the compositions are excellent.

I have to concur that there is nothing surreal about any of them. Not even borderline surreal. I’d go as far as atmospheric but not surreal.

The reason that people are angry about that is that it’s a bait and switch. The internet is glutted with “the most amazing thing you’ll see today” and it isn’t. Or “the ten most mind-blowing illustrations in the world” and they’re pretty good but not mind-blowing. False advertising makes people angry, especially in comment sections. : ) When you defend the use of the word ‘surreal’, I’m reminded of Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride when he says, “Why do you keep saying that word? I do not think it means what you think it means.” to the guy that keeps saying ‘inconceivable’.

The title of this post strays into that category. These are decent and competent photographs, verging on excellent. They are even dream-like. But they are not surreal.

None of the women are riding giraffes through deserts here. Neither are they on fire, melting, underwater, flying, translucent, made of glass, or half-spider. They’re not even in unusual settings or posing in unusual poses.

I am trying to spread the love here. I am trying to complement the photographer here. To call something surreal when it is not, regardless of your personal definition of the word, is wrong. What if someone is looking to hire a surreal photographer, does a google search, and gets Adriano and is disappointed?

If you mean beautiful or ‘out of this world’, then I really think you should change the title of the post to beautiful or out-of-this-world. And I mean that in the most supportive, genial, and friendly way possible. It’s not a burn or an insult. It’s a plea. And I concur that it’s excellent work.

  13. omg fantastic! I love each one is so beautiful. Thanks for posting

  14. So very cool. Love this so much.
