“Over the past couple of years, I have struggled to find my ‘style’. So many people I speak with tell me it is critical to my development as a photographer to find a theme, process or look that defines my photography. I have recently come to grips that I may never find that single defining element that ties my photographs together.
I have a tendency to treat my landscapes like a portrait photographer treats their subject. I feel that it is my obligation as a photographer to portray my subject in the best possible light. When I view a scene, I automatically run the picture before me through a filter in my head, whether that may be long exposures, black and whites, panorama, HDR, etc. Some days the light screams for a traditional landscape, others the grey fast moving clouds may call for a long exposure to capture the pace of the scene. I honestly don’t know how I could ever give up one kind of shooting for another.
I have come to a place where I accept that I may never have a defining style and that my portfolio will always remain an eclectic gathering of varying subjects and themes. That being said, the photos that I tend to be the happiest with are images that showcase a subject in a new or unexpected light. I live in an area with a large number of iconic subjects that are photographed by hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts a year. Any time I can make a viewer stop and take a second look at a well worn subject, I consider it a success!” ~ Moe Chen
