Amazing black and white landscape photography from Albert Tam

” I’ve been taking pictures for as long as I can remember. First with a borrowed Leica R3 35mm back in high-school, a used Hasselblad 500C after university and a Canon 5D over the past 5 years. Like many hobbyists with young families, I try to squeeze in time to shoot whenever I can. I try to compensate by constantly looking at my environment as if I had a camera, composing images with my eyes so when I do go out, I’m not too out of practice.

I used to shoot black and white film earlier, and the move to digital still has me working mostly in monochrome. Coming from a scientific background, I tend to search for patterns in light and shadow and an interesting combination of angles. Personally, I’ve found color too difficult to compose with. I much prefer the emotional impact that contrast, texture and lighting of a well composed black and white image can impart on the viewer.

My most recent photographic experimentation has revolved around long exposures, particularly with water in the frame. The peace and tranquility found in many black and white long exposure seascapes is very appealing to me, both from a compositional as well as a personal standpoint. “  ~  Albert Tam
